Langtang Valley Trek Details

Although Langtang Valley can be reached by a day’s drive from Kathmandu, this area is still unknown to the majority of trekkers. Dominated by the Langtang Himalayas this valley trek is relatively short but one which the trail, at altitudes of under 4,000m, except for a sunrise climb up to Tserko Ri at 5,000m, runs through rhododendron, and bamboo forests, along thundering waterfalls, and under stunning snow-capped mountains.

Langtang National Park (LNP), the nearest Himalayan Park from capital city Kathmandu, Gazetted by Government of Nepal on 22 march 1976 ­( 2032 Chaitra 9). The park lies in pinnacle being the meeting point between Indo-Malayan and Pale-arctic realms which embellished with the important ecosystems of both realms as the conservation priority.

This diverse trek also introduces the Buddhist culture of Tamang and Sherpa peoples. The ancient monastery of Kyanjin Gompa, situated near Tserko upholds this tradition. The spectacular views on this trek include Dorje Lakpa (6,990m), Langtang Ri (6,370m), and Langtang Lirung (7,245m).

The Langtang Valley trek begins with the drive along the Trishuli river, heading north from Kathmandu through Trishuli Bazaar. Crossing Dhunche, we will reach Syabrubensi; a Sherpa village. This route was once the trading route with Tibet. As we walk past many forests, we may have a chance of spotting local wildlife like the musk deers, Danphe, etc. Arriving at Langtang village, the Tamang people show their hospitality with such a hearty welcome. We continue our trek to KyanjinGompa where we will be having an extra day for acclimatization exploring the monasteries, cheese factory, and a hike to TserkoRi.

From this viewpoint, we will see a stunning view of mountains and glaciers. Then we return back to Lama hotel trekking south back to Syabrubensi. The next day we will take the bus back to Kathmandu which will take about seven to nine hours. We will return back to our respective hotels in Kathmandu cherishing a short enjoyable trek.

Langtang Village was completely destroyed during the April 2015 earthquake. The resilient locals have, however, been busy rebuilding and some teahouses and lodges have been rebuilt and are open. The best way for people to help is to continue to visit this area.

Best Time For Langtang Valley Trek

The weather is one of the most important factors to look at when deciding to trek to The Langtang Valley Trek. It is best suited to trek during the winters and monsoon snow and rain can be enjoyed during the trek but you should be a bit more careful in these weathers.

January – February

This time is the coldest, especially from early January to early February. This when there is heavy snowfall in the mountain and can result in cold temperatures. Day time will be warm and admirable with clear skies but the night time can be cold. Trek will be fun with magical views of snow-capped hills and mountains. Feb can definitely be your vacation time.

March – April

This is the best time of the season to trek in the Langtang Valley Trek. The weather is very favorable through the trek. Stunning views of the LangtangLirung, Langtang II and many more will be seen. Temperatures may start increasing from the mid of March and with clear skies, snow mountains will be seen at their best. Many trekkers often succeed their expedition in this time. On the journey, the bamboo and birch forests will be luscious green and dense.

May – June

This is also the perfect time for trekking right before the rainfall. Nepal starts its rainfall from the end of June till mid of August. The season of spring and summer makes the trek much more enjoyable.

July – August

The rainfall hits at its peak during this time you’ll see clouds more once in a while. Due to rainfall, the trails would be a bit slippery but trekking can be still fun as after the rain is over and you’ll see rainbow more often after rains.

September – October

Another perfect season for the Langtang Valley trek. this season is the peak of tourists due to the favorable weather. As the monsoon slowly ends, a perfect trekking climate sets itself. The temperature goes up to 20 degrees in the day time and falls down to 8 degrees during the night time. This season is when trekkers enjoy trekking the most, with a clear sky, and an amazing view of the mountains. It is highly recommended as it’s the best time for the LangtangValley trek, usually between mid-September to end. Tourists in this season are also attracted by the main festival of Nepal; Dashain and Tihar.

November – December

As winter slowly begins, snow falls begin in the Langtang region and it eventually tough to trek. Nights will start to get colder. November is the busy season as it is the clearest month with sparkling days. The day time temperatures are very stable and constant and due to this, the view of the clear blue sky and the mountain is phenomenal. From December, the temperature starts to get cold and begins to snow. in night time Temperatures dropping to -5 degrees C at high altitudes.

Langtang Valley Trek Difficulty

The Langtang valley trek is an easy and rewarding trek. The hiking will be from 3-6 hours a day depending on the destination, taking regular breaks where we admire the mountain views. The trek routes involve long treks, steep descents, and a steep forward trail in the rocky paths and the forests as well.

The highest elevation point in Langtang Valley Trek is 5,000m above sea level. Therefore, Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is one of the significant threats while trekking in Langtang. You are required to take all the necessary precautions while traveling in such a high elevation. Insist on drinking plenty of water, and be aware of the symptoms of AMS.

To go on such treks, the fitter, the more comfortable and enjoyable the journey will be. If you have an experience or enjoy trekking, this may be an advantage for you. This trek is not recommended to those who suffer from sensitive medical conditions such as heart or lung disease.

Langtang Valley Trekking Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival Kathmandu

Day 2: Kathmandu sightseeing and basic preparation for the Trip

Day 3: Kathmandu to Syabrubesi 1,550m, drive 8 hrs

After an early breakfast, we set out from Kathmandu for a 7-8 -hour scenic cruise down to Syabru Besi. This is a major village town and trading post for the people who stay in this region. The locals come down here to buy their essential commodities. After driving for something like 30 km, we approach pristine villages on the banks of the river Trishuli. We also get to view the enchanting panorama of the Himalaya, including the Annapurnas, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal and the well-known peaks of the Langtang region. Overnight at a lodge in Syabru Bensi with all meals inclusive.

Day 4: Trek from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel (2380m) – 6/7 hrs trek

We Cross through the suspension bridge while heading precipitously along a stream. The River we are following is a lot of the Langtang River. We can enjoy our walk going through oak, rhododendron and bamboo forests. There is also a variety of wildlife in these forests: yellow-throated martens, wild boars, frisky langur monkeys, red pandas, and Himalayan black bears are some of them we are most likely to come across in this area. Overnight in Lama Hotel with all meals inclusive.

Day 5: Lama Hotel to Langtang Village 3430m – 6/7 hrs trek

From Lama Hotel the trail gradually climbs up to Ghora Tabela through a forest of hemlock, oaks, maples, and rhododendron with spectacular, fleeting glimpses of Mt. Langtang Lirung (7,244m). Leaving Ghora Tabela, the path follows the delightful Langtang Khola, climbing steadily up to the spread-out Langtang village (3,500m). In the afternoon, we hiking up to Kyanjin Ri and back to Kyanjin Gompa.

Day 6: Langtang Village to Kyanjing Gompa 3870m, 2/3 hrs trek

We pass through the tiny village, stone-built houses, and climb to a Chorten and pass a huge mani along a gentle path of a hill. The valley relocates to a U-shaped one as we enter into a level of riverbed. Today is pretty short walking; allowing time to acclimatize and explore our surroundings. This place is famous for cheese and curd. We could sample some. Overnight in Kyangjin Gompa with full board meals.

Day 7: Kyanjin Gompa exploration day

We take a day off for acclimatization and proper rest. This is really good for our bodies. We get to explore interesting places like a nearby monastery, and a cheese factory, etc. We can climb Kyangjin Ri located at 4350m from where amazing views of snow-capped mountains lie wonderfully spread out right next to us. We can walk up the moraine to see the spectacular mountain ridges and undulating glaciers. We bunk out hereabouts for our overnight with all meals inclusive.

Day 8: Kyanjing Gompa to Lama Hotel – 5 hrs trek

Day 9: Lama Hotel to Syabrubesi 1400m, 5hrs

Day 10: Syabrubesi to Kathmandu – 8 hrs drive

Day 11: Departure
